$30 an hour in New Zealand: weekly and yearly pay after tax

Reviewed by Radif Partners

Overtime now taxed at 30 %

At $30 an hour for 40 hours, the annual income is $62,400, past the $53,500 threshold. The consequence is felt in overtime: every extra hour worked is now taxed at 30 %, not 17.5 %. An hour of overtime at time and a half, $45, keeps about $29.14 after tax, ACC and KiwiSaver. On the normal week of $1,200, PAYE is $210, the ACC levy $21 and KiwiSaver $42, so $927 reaches your account. The rate is close to the median hourly wage of $35.96, so $30 an hour is a typical wage for skilled and trade roles. The independent earner tax credit still applies in full with the ME code, since $62,400 is below $66,000. The 30 % band itself runs up to $78,100 of annual income.

Stats NZ put median hourly earnings at $35.96 in the June 2026 quarter, which is $74,797 a year for a 40-hour week. A salary of $62,400 is 17 % less than that full-time equivalent of the median, so it pays below the typical hourly rate. Median weekly earnings for all wage earners, part-time included, are lower at $1,419 a week. Average and median salary in New Zealand.
