New Zealand income tax is a single progressive scale applied to all your taxable income for the year, whether it comes from wages, self-employment, rent or interest. For the 2026-27 tax year, from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027, the scale charges 10.5 % on the first $15,600, 17.5 % on income from $15,601 to $53,500, 30 % up to $78,100, 33 % up to $180,000 and 39 % above. On a taxable income of $60,000, that gives $10,221 of income tax, an average rate of 17.0 %, although every extra dollar is taxed at 30 %. Tax credits then reduce the bill: the independent earner tax credit of up to $520 for incomes between $24,000 and $70,000, and credits for donations. The calculator applies the scale and, if you choose the ME code, the independent earner credit. The ACC earners’ levy is shown separately in the breakdown, because it is a levy for injury cover, not income tax.

The thresholds were raised on 31 July 2024, for the first time since 2010. The 2024-25 tax year used blended rates to cover the change; since 1 April 2025 the new thresholds apply in full. The income tax rates guide gives the history and the blended rates.
From income tax to what you pay
For employees, income tax is deducted through PAYE and squared up automatically after 31 March: Inland Revenue compares the tax deducted with the tax due and issues a refund or a bill. Self-employed people file an IR3 return and may pay provisional tax during the year if their residual income tax exceeds $5,000. If you worked only part of the year, PAYE was probably too high; see the IRD tax refund calculator.
Questions people ask
How much income tax do I pay on $60,000 in NZ?
$10,221 for the 2026-27 tax year: $1,638 on the first $15,600, $6,633 on the next $37,900 at 17.5 %, and 30 % on the last $6,500. That is an average rate of 17.0 %, before the ACC earners’ levy of 1.75 %, which is not income tax.
Is there a tax-free threshold in New Zealand?
No. Unlike Australia or the United Kingdom, New Zealand taxes income from the first dollar, at 10.5 % up to $15,600. Low earners are supported through tax credits instead: the independent earner tax credit of up to $520, Working for Families and the minimum family tax credit, which are paid separately from the tax scale.
Does income tax include my rental income and interest?
Yes. Income tax is charged on your total taxable income: salary, interest, dividends, rental profit, self-employed profit and most other income, all added together and taxed with the same scale. Interest and dividends usually have tax deducted at source. This calculator treats the amount you enter as your total taxable income.
