A New Zealand salary is quoted per year, before tax, and it can hide very different amounts of take-home pay. On $85,000, income tax for 2026-27 is $17,928: 10.5 % on the first $15,600, 17.5 % to $53,500, 30 % to $78,100 and 33 % on the last $6,900. The ACC earners’ levy adds $1,488. KiwiSaver at the default 3.5 % takes $2,975 into your own fund. What remains, $62,610 a year, is about $5,218 a month or $1,204 a week. The calculator uses the same annual method as Inland Revenue’s end-of-year assessment, so its figures are what you should see on your summary of earnings once the year is complete, whatever the pay frequency. Use the options to add a student loan or change your KiwiSaver rate; the headline shows the annual take-home and the table breaks down every deduction.

The share of salary kept falls slowly with income, from about 83 % at $45,000 to about 72 % at $140,000. New Zealand’s top rate of 39 % only applies above $180,000, and there is no tax-free threshold: the 10.5 % rate starts on the first dollar.
Comparing two offers
When two offers differ in salary and benefits, compare what you keep. An extra $5,000 at $85,000 adds $3,263 after tax and ACC. Employer contributions above the 3.5 % KiwiSaver minimum, health insurance or a car are benefits with their own tax treatment: employer KiwiSaver is taxed through ESCT, and most other benefits through fringe benefit tax paid by the employer. For the amount you should ask to reach a given take-home, use the net to gross calculator.
Questions people ask
What is my salary after tax in NZ on $85,000?
$65,585 a year without KiwiSaver, after $17,928 of income tax and $1,488 of ACC levy, with an M tax code. With KiwiSaver at 3.5 % you take home $62,610, but $2,975 goes into your KiwiSaver account, with $2,083 from your employer after ESCT.
Is salary after tax in NZ the same as take-home pay?
Salary after tax usually means after income tax and ACC only. Take-home pay also removes KiwiSaver and student loan deductions, which are not taxes but reduce what reaches your bank account. This calculator shows both: the annual take-home in the headline and the tax and ACC lines separately.
How much of a pay rise do I keep in New Zealand?
It depends on your marginal rate. Between $53,500 and $78,100 you keep 70 cents per dollar before ACC, 68.25 cents after it; between $78,100 and $180,000, 67 cents before ACC. KiwiSaver takes another 3.5 cents if you are a member, but that part stays yours in your fund.
